On Sunday 17 May, pupil Martin Shone won the R&A Local Clubs’ Gold Medal in sensational fashion on the Old Course in St Andrews, just minutes from St Leonards and at the centre of the town’s golfing world. Competitive play on the Old Course on a Sunday is a rare privilege in itself, but Martin made the occasion count.

After recovering from a quadruple bogey earlier in the competition, Martin fought his way back into contention before producing a phenomenal closing round of 66 to secure victory by four shots. Fittingly, the round ended finishing with a brilliant eagle two on the 18th.

The win now earns Martin automatic entry into the St Andrews Links Trophy this June, widely regarded as the second highest ranked amateur event in Europe and one of the most prestigious competitions in the amateur game.

The weekend also highlighted the depth of talent within the St Leonards Golf Academy, past and present. Former pupil Ewen Farquhar made the cut alongside Martin, with the pair playing together in the final round on the Old Course. Fellow High Performance golfers Fraser (Year 10) and Harry (Year 12) were also part of the effort, supporting as caddies across the weekend.

A composed and impressive performance from Martin on one of the most recognised courses in world golf.
