Year 12 Collaborative Science Project Day
15 January 2026
Year 12 pupils recently took part in the IB Collaborative Science Project Day, a full-day programme designed to connect learning across Biology, Chemistry and Physics through a series of collaborative tasks.
Working in tutor groups, pupils began the day with a short briefing before moving into a range of timed challenges. These included identifying an unknown chemical substance using laboratory skills, estimating the number of stomata on a leaf, solving chemistry-based puzzles without the use of devices, and recording short video responses to science questions posed by younger St Leonards pupils.
The activities encouraged pupils to draw on prior learning from earlier years and apply their knowledge in unfamiliar situations, while working closely with their peers. All tasks were completed by early afternoon, followed by time to tidy workspaces, prepare presentations and reflect on the day before gathering in the auditorium.
During the final session, groups presented selected solutions and video responses to the year group. The day concluded with prizes, with Group 15 named as overall winners. The winning team was made up of Jack S, Kai P, Eileen P, Elina M and Eleanor K.
Pupils reflected positively on the experience, noting that the day helped reinforce learning across Chemistry, Biology and Physics, while also strengthening teamwork, communication and problem-solving skills. Many felt the collaborative format offered a welcome change from the usual timetable. The project gave pupils the opportunity to work together in new ways, and we look forward to welcoming the next Year 12 cohort to the Collaborative Science Project.
