Junior
Introduction from Head of the Junior School
Pupils in Years 1 to 6 receive the perfect start to their education through the Primary Years Programme at St Leonards. From their own dedicated section of the expansive St Leonards campus in the heart of St Andrews, the Junior years aim to make learning an enjoyable and rewarding experience and to bring out the very best in every child.
Primary Years Programme
We aim to instill a lifelong love of learning in our pupils through the inspiring International Baccalaureate curriculum. The first chapter of this learner journey is the Primary Years Programme (PYP), which is followed at St Leonards from Year 1 to Year 6.
The PYP gives pupils a firm grounding in numeracy, literacy, physical, social and personal education, the arts and social studies. It is an inquiry-based curriculum structured around six transdisciplinary themes, which are directed by the pupils’ interests and are global in outlook.
In our Junior Years, numerical and literacy concepts and skills are taught alongside English and Maths and integrated into the Units of Inquiry at every opportunity. French is also taught in the Junior Years from Year 1 to 6. PE, Games and swimming lessons take place throughout the week all year round, teaching team games and encouraging children to be active and enjoy playing sports, such as football, hockey, rugby and cricket, together.
IB Learner Profile
Our young people are supported and encouraged to uphold the values of the International Baccalaureate Learner Profile. Pupils at St Leonards aspire to be:
- Inquirers
- Knowledgeable
- Reflective
- Balanced
- Principled
- Thinkers
- Communicators
- Risk Takers
- Caring
- Open Minded
Golf
In the Primary Years Programme, pupils have the opportunity to join our distinguished St Leonards Golf Programme, to help gain or continue to build on their understanding of golf, focusing on essential skills and techniques. St Andrews is renowned the world over as the Home of Golf, and the Golf Programme at St Leonards is recognised as one of the finest golfing schools, giving students access to some of the best Links courses, including the Old Course, the Castle Course and the Jubilee Course.
