We are passionate about sport and we aim is to give our pupils a love of physical exercise that will stay with them for life. Whether it’s through timetabled PE lessons, via the School’s extensive competitive fixture list or through our wide ranging co-curricular programme, sporting opportunities abound at St Leonards.
A sporting school
Today, Junior School and Senior School boys and girls are spoilt for choice. They can play rugby and lacrosse, golf on the most famous courses in the world, go on Alpine skiing expeditions, take part in water sports activities right on the School’s doorstep… and a whole lot more.
All St Leonards pupils receive timetabled PE lessons up to Year 12. Sports covered include rugby, lacrosse, hockey, tennis, cricket, football swimming, golf and athletics.
Many choose to supplement this by taking part in sporting co-curricular activities, focussing either on sports they enjoy or on ones which they haven’t tried before.

Junior and Senior teams regularly compete against other schools in a range of sporting fixtures. In addition, our pupils represent the School in the likes of athletics meets and golf tournaments.
Achievements and sporting heritage
Today, St Leonards pupils regularly achieve regional and national selection in their chosen sports. Recently our students have been picked for regional and national sides in golf, hockey and lacrosse. Our teams have also picked up titles in hockey, lacrosse, golf and athletics.
St Leonards also has a rich sporting heritage and our pupils boast a proud record of achievement. The School lays claim to be the first place in the world at which girls’ lacrosse was played and the first UK school at which girls took part in organised sport.
Our facilities include expansive grass playing fields, all-weather pitches, squash courts, a 25m indoor swimming pool and a gymnasium. In addition, golf coaching takes place at the nearby St Andrews Links Golf Academy and Sixth Formers have the use of the St Andrews University gym. Professional teams such as Everton Football Club and Norwich City Football Club have come to St Leonards for pre-season training.

Facilities for our pupils don’t end on the St Leonards site. Our sporting programme also makes full use of those in St Andrews and the surrounding area, helping to create an extensive range of opportunities for all. In close proximity to the School, pupils can therefore take part in activities like sea kayaking, falconry and of course, golf.Visit St Leonards
