For many pupils, A Level Results Day marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter. For others, it can mean taking a moment to reconsider what comes next.
While Clearing is an important option for pupils who have not received the grades they hoped for, it is not the only route forward. St Leonards’ new Postgraduate Programme offers another opportunity: a year to develop academically, gain independence and prepare for university in the unique setting of St Andrews.
The programme, which welcomes its first cohort this August, is designed as a bridge between school and higher education. Pupils benefit from the support and community of St Leonards while taking greater ownership of their learning and preparing for the increased independence of university life.
A year with purpose
The Postgraduate Programme combines academic study with opportunities to pursue individual interests and ambitions. Alongside their studies, pupils can take part in St Leonards’ extensive co-curricular programme, including sport, creative activities and opportunities through the School’s renowned Golf Academy.
Boarding is another important part of the experience, helping pupils develop the confidence, organisation and independence needed for life beyond school.
For those who have missed the grades for their first-choice university, this can provide an alternative to making a rushed decision through Clearing. It can also suit pupils who have achieved their results but would benefit from more time to prepare before moving into higher education.
Looking beyond Results Day
Choosing a different route does not mean putting ambitions on hold. For some pupils, an additional year can be a valuable opportunity to strengthen their academic foundations, explore new interests and become more confident in their own abilities.
At St Leonards, this takes place within an international school community in the heart of St Andrews, giving pupils access to the academic, cultural and sporting opportunities that make the town such a distinctive place to live and learn.
Results Day may change the route a pupil takes, but it does not have to change where they are going.
