Blue Plaque Unveiled at St Leonards to Honour Sir Hugh Lyon Playfair
28 April 2026
St Leonards has unveiled a historic blue plaque to commemorate Sir Hugh Lyon Playfair (1786-1861), former Provost of St Andrews and a key figure in shaping the town. Playfair played a central role in the development of St Andrews in the 19th century, improving infrastructure, restoring key areas and supporting its growing reputation.
Now in place outside St Leonards House, the Main School Reception, the plaque forms part of a wider initiative led by the St Andrews Pilgrim Foundation to highlight individuals connected to buildings across the town. Inspired by the English Heritage Blue Plaque Scheme, the plaques mark buildings of historical significance and the figures connected to them.
The ceremony commenced with a welcome from Head of School Simon Brian, followed by remarks from Dita Stanis-Traken, Chair of the St Andrews Pilgrim Foundation, who spoke about Playfair’s significance to the town and the importance of the plaque. Edward Playfair, a descendant of Sir Hugh, then shared a few words before officially unveiling the plaque, joined by his son Lyon, who is currently studying at the University of St Andrews. Year 7 pupils in Mr Kell’s History class were also part of the morning, having spent time learning about Playfair’s life and impact before coming down to see the unveiling.
The plaque marks Sir Hugh Playfair’s connection to both the School and the town, and offering a clear link to the history that surrounds it.
