In Year 10, pupils begin their GCSE/IGCSE courses, before sitting their final examinations at the end of Year 11.

All pupils take English Language and Literature, Mathematics, Science (pupils can take these as separate GCSE subjects, as part of Science GCSE, or choose a Biology/Geography option). In addition, all pupils choose a Modern Foreign Language (French, German, or Spanish), unless they are taking an EAL (English as an Additional Language) course.

Each pupil must also choose three optional subjects, although we appreciate that each pupil is an individual and that fewer subjects at this stage might be more suitable for some. Such possible arrangements should be discussed with the Deputy Head (teaching and learning) in the first instance. The optional subjects offered are: Latin, History, Geography, Art & Design, Music, PE, Computer Science and Drama. Pupils may also select an additional Modern Foreign Language.

In Years 10 and 11, pupils also receive a comprehensive programme of PE, Games, PSHE (known as 'Ad Vitam') and ICT lessons.

We recognise the importance of subject selections, so full consultation between parents, teachers and pupils takes place before final decisions are reached. Detailed curriculum guides are provided for further information on specific subjects at GCSE and IGCSE, in order to support families as pupils in Year 9 make their choices for the years ahead.

GCSE and IGCSE qualifications are recognised worldwide and are the perfect preparation for both the IB Career-related Programme and the IB Diploma Programme, which are our two Sixth Form pathways at St Leonards. IGCSEs are offered in a number of subjects, where it is felt that they provide the best quality of learning.
