28.04.23 : St Leonards Secures National Golfing Success at HMC Championships

We are delighted to have been ranked number four in the UK for golf in the HMC (The Heads’ Conference) Schools national rankings. This follows an outstanding fourth place finish for the St Leonards team at the HMC Championships, held at the JCB Golf and Country Club on 22 and 23 April.

Of particular note was Ewen Farquhar (16), who won the HMC boys’ order of merit for UK schools with a second place finish in the competition, which means that Ewen is ranked number one boy in UK schools golf for 2022-23.

Ewen was recognised last year as winner of the prestigious R&A Gold Medal, which is awarded annually to the best young golfer in St Andrews, the Home of Golf.

Also from St Leonards, Emil Hoffman (17) finished in 16th place in the competition.

The team then travelled onwards to Slaley Hall Golf Club in Northumberland, where they competed in the ISGA (Independent Schools Golf Association) national finals, having won the area finals once again. The team finished in 11th place out of 20 schools in the finals, and 76 teams in the national competition.

Fintan Bonner, Director of Golf at St Leonards and Senior Instructor at the St Andrews Links Golf Academy, said: “It is fantastic to see our six-tier Golf Programme continue to go from strength to strength. Not only do we have record numbers enrolled this year, but these recent successes from our High Performance Squad have secured a number four national ranking for St Leonards. I am incredibly proud of all our young golfers, and in particular of Ewen and the team for their latest achievements.”

Simon Brian, Head of St Leonards School, said: “This is a truly impressive achievement for the St Leonards team and shows that they are reaping the rewards of their hard work. All our elite golfers train regularly at the Golf Academy in St Andrews, and I would like to extend my warmest congratulations to the team - Ewen, Emil, Theo and Caspar.”
