Oliver Eve, our Deputy Head Boy spent part of the summer holidays volunteering in Fiji. The Young Explorer’s Trust and The Churchill University Scholarship Trust helped him to raise funds and enabled him to participate as a volunteer for Projects Abroad: Fiji. During his four week trip, he lived and worked alongside local people, integrating into the community and helping to make a difference.
Highlights of Oliver’s trip included assisting with Mangrove reforestation work, passing his PADI Open Water Diver qualification which enabled him to swim with sharks and survey diving to monitor the different fish populations in Fiji’s waters at the Pacific Harbour. He also visited the capital of Fiji, Suva, to help researchers to tag juvenile Scalloped Hammerhead Sharks.
Spending time with the local community was another favourite for Oliver - he taught local children how to swim, learnt the traditional Fijian dance and enjoyed having some spare time to explore, visiting the local landmarks and white-water rafting.
Oliver has returned to school feeling inspired and has kindly shared his report with us. To read more about Oliver’s Fiji experience, please click here.
