To mark the end of a busy autumn term, some Year 8 students had a very important task to present to the ‘Design & Technology Dragons’ Den’.
Head of Art & Design, Donna Rae set the Year 8 D&T class the brief of creating a logo and packaging for a product of their choice. Students worked in teams to create the ultimate design to present for manufacturing. The assignment involved a series of processes including researching different logos to develop ideas, considering alternatives to ideas and experimentation, and teamwork to decide on the best design, documenting every step in their sketchbooks.
Once happy with their chosen design, the students had to produce the finished article and prepare their presentations to the judging panel. This term’s invited dragons were Michelle Wilkinson, founder of The Very Lovely Sauce Company, Andy Travers, owner of IPCMS Ltd, & Sarah Proudfoot, acting St Leonards marketing manager & St Leonards Senior.
Each of the five groups took to the stage to present their efforts to the dragons: ‘Plush Pig Onesies’, ‘FL Sports’, ‘Boost Juice’, ‘Lazar Tag’ and ‘Inspector Detector’. A varied range of products were reviewed, from fruit juice holders, to sports shoe boxes, to a detective kit! After a very difficult decision, the dragons crowned the Inspector Detector team, Sophie Issberner and Emma Ylitalo, the winners. The judges felt they clearly understood the brief and tackled it well, delivering a seamless pitch.
This school competition was a taster of graphic design run in the art department, which the pupils thoroughly enjoyed. Well done to all the teams who took part, and roll on next term’s challenge!
