01.02.16 : New Junior School Headmaster

St Leonards School is delighted to announce the appointment of the new Headmaster of the Junior School, William Goldsmith, who will start at the beginning of the next academic year in August.

Mr Goldsmith  is currently Head of Boarding and a member of the Senior Management Team at Highfield School in Hampshire, one of England’s leading prep schools.  He has a particular interest in pastoral care and well-being. He was previously Director of Music at St Paul’s Cathedral School and taught for five years at another renowned prep school, Ludgrove.

He was educated at Radley College and has a BA joint honours degree in Music and History from Durham University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and is completing an MSc (part-time) in Teaching and Learning at Oxford University. He is also a qualified inspector with the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI), the inspecting agency of independent schools in England. His wife, Catherine, is Head of Lower Sixth and a Geography teacher at Wellington College in Berkshire, a prominent IB school.

With strong family connections in Scotland and indeed Fife, they already hold much affection for St Andrews and are well-acquainted with the area. They have a young son, Arthur and are looking forward to joining St Leonards Junior School later this year, and beginning their family life here: “I am thrilled to be appointed as Head of St Leonards Junior School. I am hugely looking forward to moving to such an inspiring place and getting to know the pupils, parents and staff. Catherine, Arthur and I are very pleased to be coming to St Andrews, which has strong family connections for us.

When I first visited St Leonards and the town, I was immediately struck by the warmth of the community, the wonderful relationship between the staff and pupils and the palpable sense of ambition across both the Senior and Junior Schools. There are exciting times ahead and I cannot wait to lead the school through the next stage of its development”.

Although Mr Goldsmith will be taking up his post in August 2016, he will be visiting the school on a number of occasions before then to meet parents, pupils and staff.  His first visit is on Wednesday, 17 and Thursday 18 February and will be present for the Junior School Open Doors Morning.  We look forward to welcoming Mr Goldsmith and his family to Fife and indeed to St Leonards!
