Excellent display served up by young aces

Some young aces served up a fine display at the St Leonards-New Park Junior Girls Tennis Championship recently.

Doubles teams from the host school, Kilgraston, Craigclowan, Dundee High School and Strathallan participated in the keenly anticipated annual event, trading strokes in exciting rallies in U11 and U13 sections.

At the end of a scintillating afternoon of round robin play, teams from Kilgraston scooped first places in the U13 A and B sections with Craigclowan taking the U11A title and Dundee High School earning victory in the U11B category.

The team title, based on the number of individual tennis games won by each school, went to Craigclowan.

St Leonards PE teacher Isabel Myles, who organised the event, said, “We saw some fantastic tennis today and the standard of play is rising year by year.

“The children always enjoy taking part in the tournament and it’s great to see them having fun whilst putting on some high quality stuff.”

St Leonards National Junior Golf Championship

Golf Championship

A continuous April shower couldn’t put a dampener on the St Leonards National Junior Golf Championship.

A record entry of more than 160 talented young birdie-hunters braved some wet weather to put on an outstanding display of golf in the prestigious annual competition.

Boys and girls from across Scotland and from as far afield as Bromsgrove did battle in various age categories, with U9s tackling the Balgove Course, U11s and U13s locking horns on the Strathtyrum and U15s taking to the fairways of the Eden Course.

Rosie Dawson, Director of Golf at St Leonards School, helped to organise the event which is run in conjunction with the St Andrews Links Management Committee.

She said, “Unfortunately the weather wasn’t great but that didn’t stop the players from turning in some impressive scores and having some fun as well.”

St Leonards Headmaster Dr Michael Carslaw handed over the prizes at the end of the day.

He said, “I’m delighted that the reputation of the Tournament continues to grow, as shown by the fact that this year’s event attracted a record number of players.

“Pupils at St Leonards are fortunate to have the wonderful courses and facilities of St Andrews on their doorstep and it’s great to be able to invite children from other schools to play on the historic Links.”

Selected results from Spring 2010

Ryden Rose Bowl

The well publicised bad weather of the past few months caused the cancelation of a number of sporting fixtures during the Spring term. However, when momentary lapses in the snow and rain did arrive, St Leonards pupils did themselves proud on the sports field...

The lacrosse season at St Leonards got under way with a real thriller when the Girls 1st XII hosted Glenalmond. Goals flew in during an end to end encounter which saw the visitors win 9-8.

Director of Sport at St Leonards, Iain Watson said, “The performance bodes really well for what we hope will be an exciting season ahead.”

Iain was proved correct as a hugely rewarding season brought a second successive appearance at the national U18 Small Schools Tournament finals at Rendcomb in Gloucestershire, and a joint 1st place performance at the Ryden Rose Bowl event at Fettes.

St Leonards pupils made a real splash in competitive swimming.

Year 10 students Lauren Goadby and Hannah Gray and Year 7 pupil Andrew Robertson competed at the Scottish Schools Swimming Championships after qualifying via exceptional performances at the Fife Schools Swimming Gala.

In hockey, against Fettes, the Boys A team drew their match 1-1 whilst the B team won 3-1.

Meanwhile, St Leonards-New Park youngsters raced their way to some outstanding athletics results. At the Belhaven Cross Country meet, Sophie Innes won the girls U10 event and Tristan Rees won the boys U10 race whilst both the boys’ and girls’ teams finished 2nd at in the Fettes Cross Country relays.

In the Senior School the boys U13 hockey team narrowly missed out on reaching the final of the Strathallan 6’s tournament, finishing in a highly creditable 3rd place.

In their hockey matches against Lathallan, the U12 Boys won 6-0, the U10 Boys won 7-0 and the U12 Girls won 1-0.

In the Senior School, in their fixtures against the High School of Dundee, the Boys 1st XI won 8-0 while the U15 Boys team recorded a 5-1 victory.

Coach Isabel Myles said, “The Dundee staff were very impressed at the level of play the boys had achieved since the first round of matches in January.”

Ten St Leonards students received some expert coaching when they attended a Fife Hockey Development Day at the Fife Institute of Physical and Recreational Education in Glenrothes.

The St Leonards-New Park U9 Rugby Tournament threw up its usual fare of free-scoring matches and eye-catching performances with Clifton Hall emerging victorious and the hosts finishing 4th.

Meanwhile, the School's talented runners continued to race ahead of the opposition!

At The Scottish Schools Cross Country Championships at Irvine, Halina Rees retained her 15-17 girls' title, her brother Logan Rees took 3rd place in the boys U14 race and Michael Overend came second in the boys B race. Both Halina and Michael qualified from the event to represent Scotland at the Schools International at Truro.

In the team sections, the St Leonards Group B squad of Halina, Grace Collison-Owen, Olivia Collison-Owen and Flora Ogilvie won the bronze medal.

At the Fife Schools Cross Country Championships, a trio of outstanding performances by St Leonards pupils crowned a highly successful day. Halina Rees won the senior girls race, Michael Overend won the senior boys event and Logan Rees won the S1(Y8) boys race. In the team events, the S1(Y8) girls team won gold, the S1(Y8) boys won bronze, the S2/3 (Y9/10) girls came 6th, the senior boys won silver and the senior girls won gold.

Away from the School, competing for Fife AC, runners including Halina Rees, Michael Overend, Logan Rees, Adam Harris and George Rees turned in some outstanding results in local and national competitions, securing themselves plenty of publicity in the local press in the process.
