CAS - Views from our students

In a CAS of their own

Not daunted by the 150 hours of Creativity, Action and Service they need to complete as part of the IB Diploma, our students simply rolled up their sleeves and got stuck in. Here are some of their views...

CAS - Families First

Chris Schmitt, pictured above with the team, writes about Families First:

“FF was all about going to a family's house and painting their room. It was great fun because our supervisor was a good laugh and the people were really funny so we all started to paint ourselves as well as the walls. I would do this project again when I have the chance. I would recommend it to all students because you will enjoy it!”

Lea Samek really enjoyed the Action part:

“I enjoyed golf because I had a goal when I started in September. My goal was getting a handicap and I achieved it yesterday which is the reason why I am a bit proud of myself. I learned how to have a good grip and swing and had quite a few lessons with a golf teacher. I have played three matches which was great. I will continue to play golf and hope to get a better handicap. I can recommend playing golf in St Andrews because of its golf history.”

Joan Canda enjoyed the Service element:

“I had to collect money in the streets for Save the Children. I never thought it would be good fun! I also liked working in a hospital in Germany. I was there for five days and I spent most of the time in the children’s ward. It sounds cheesy but I really got the feeling of doing something good!”

CAS - Gold DoE

Amy Zhu, pictured above, tackled Gold D of E:

“During the planning part the main idea is you need to plan the route by yourself, in the group. Hiking is the action part and so is camping. I enjoyed it as I had lovely team members and the rivers, views and mountains were beautiful. Some days you may get wet, but that is another part of the fun! Careful about the night though it is really cold!”

Joleen Zhu worked in the Sue Ryder Care charity shop in St Andrews:

“It was good fun working there at the weekend, steaming clothes, setting up shelves and checking everything that’s up for sale. The people in the shop were very nice and they helped me learn a lot. Its good to meet and work with people outside school and see how a charity works.”

Shirley Xu enjoyed her CAS with Drama:

“ Last term we performed in the Beggars Opera and though I was just a small part in it I tried my best to act it well. It was very interesting and it had both singing and dancing in it. We could choose which part we preferred and there were many lovely roles in it. It was a wonderful play and everyone who watched it said they liked the play.”
