September 2009 - Back to School BarbequePicture: marquee1 Thanks to everyone who helped at the barbeque and to all the families who came to make it a jolly afternoon. It was the perfect event to show off the new School Marquee purchased with funds raised by the PA. The marquee was the main item on the Headmaster’s wish list last year and through the PA’s main fundraiser, a wine tasting evening last February, the PA was able to top up the coffers and give the green light for the purchase. A warm thank you to all the generous silent auction sponsors and bidders, school events team, and legions of volunteers who helped to achieve this goal. The marquee was very much needed for school and sport events and will be of great use to the whole school. Picture: marquee2 Summer term 2008-2009 summaryTennis Day Fine weather made the annual Tennis Day a pleasure to attend. This year around 100 people came along, with over 70 taking part in the tennis. As in previous years, participants were divided into “mini leagues” dependent on the children’s ages, thus ensuring everyone spent sufficient time on court. The winners of each “mini league” enter a play off for places in the final, which this year was between George and Jane Lorimer, and Vanessa and Jack Stewart. The spirited playing with some nail biting rallies gave spectators some very entertaining viewing, with Vanessa and Jack ultimately retaining their title. The barbeque master, Kyff Roberts, artfully displayed his skill once again and produced expertly prepared grilled burgers and sausages to accompany salads and home baking provided by volunteers. Activities of Bouncy Castle and Treasure Hunts kept the younger children busy. Thanks to everyone who came and we hope to see you at next year’s Tennis Day. The Parents Association Summer Ball The Ball was again held at the Lower College Hall at the University of St Andrews. After a champagne reception, dinner was served in charming warm glow of the Hall where diners were surrounded by the university’s collection of art and portraits, flowers and stunning architectural details. The Cutting Edge, a fantastic ceilidh/ rock band compelled almost everyone to the dance floor. Thanks to all who attended and also to those who gave wonderful feedback on their delightful evening. News from 2008Picture: PA tennis day small 1 2007-2008 school year afforded PA with new opportunities for social and fundraising events. The annual Parents Association Tennis Day was attended by over 90 people and held at St Leonards School Tennis Courts overlooking the sea. Much fun was had by all 52 players who played, as they enthusiastically took to the courts, no matter how much experience they had in the past. Participants were divided into “mini leagues” dependant on the children’s ages, thus ensuring everyone spent sufficient time on court. The winners of each “mini league” played off for places in the final, which this year was between Will and Tom Fowler and Vanessa and Jack Stewart. It was a very close match, with some fantastic rallies, but Vanessa and Jack’s efforts found victory. (Side note: Vanessa S partnered in the first round with SLNP teacher, Mrs Gifford, who decided to retire gracefully, and asked Jack to step in). The Headmaster and members of staff, along with other parents, played with their children in the spirit of this family day event. The barbeque masters David Taylor and Kyff Roberts showed their skills once again and produced expertly prepared grilled burgers and sausages, and under the marquee PA volunteers provided all manner of salads, breads and desserts for the hungry players and spectators. The popular Pimms tent did a roaring trade adding a festive flair. Activities of Bouncy Castle and face painting kept the children busy, creating an enjoyable atmosphere. The weather held and complimented the good humour and cheer of the day. Thanks to all the Parent volunteers and organisers. Hope to see you next year. The Parents Association Summer Ball was held at the Lower College Hall at the University of St Andrews. The atmospheric hall is reached through an ancient archway underneath the square tower of St Salvator's Chapel. A splendid summer’s evening allowed everyone to enjoy welcome champagne cocktails on the quadrangle lawn, reminding us all of the colourful and rich history of St Andrews. Dinner in the beautiful banquet room was followed by a fundraising live auction and then a move upstairs for dancing to music by The Cutting Edge, a fantastic ceilidh / rock band. Everyone enjoyed a lively evening and a chance to visit with friends. The continued increase in attendees of this event make it the most popular on the PA calendar. Picture: PA tennis day small 2 | |
