Students at St Leonards pulled in the crowds recently when they brought their colourful version of ‘Guys and Dolls’ to the Byre Theatre stage.

Sixth Form (S5&S6) pupils put on three sold out performances of the hit musical, entertaining parents and members of the public alike with their telling of the classic tale of gamblers and their girls.

Nickie Ledger, Head of Speech and Drama at St Leonards, said, “The shows went really well, they were a big success.

“It was nice to see the stalwarts of previous productions blossom into such fantastic performers on the stage and to see some new blood up there too.”

The shows featured barnstorming renditions of songs including “Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat” and “Luck Be a Lady”, as well as choreography by Lower Sixth Former (S5) Lauren Sandeman and sets designed by Upper Sixth Former (S6) Sam Chase.

Nickie explained, “I just gave Sam a brief of ‘Sin City meets Guys and Dolls’ and what he came up with was brilliant.

“Lauren came up with some fantastic routines as well. It meant we were able to give the production a little bit of our own flavour.”

With further assistance coming from Drama teacher Liz Dunsmuir’s backstage team, the performances were a real team effort according to Nickie.

“It was great to see all the students puling together to put on a fabulous show,” she said.

“What I really loved about this particular production though was that we had such a huge number of our boys on the stage. It’s the first time they have equalled if not exceeded the number of girls.”

Pupils at St Leonards-New Park School have had a smashing good time recently!

Children across all year groups have been taking part in tennis taster sessions aimed at introducing them to the sport and giving them some ace beginner skills.

Marjory Finlay, a coach with St Andrews Tennis Club, which has run the sessions, said, “The lessons are designed to get the children into tennis.

“If they show an interest then that’s great, that’s what we want.

“Some of the pupils were quite young but they picked it up really quickly.”

Along with her fellow coach Kirsty Stewart, Marjory has visited all of the schools in St Andrews, helping to develop fabulous forehands in almost 800 youngsters.

“All the children have looked like they were enjoying it,” added Marjory.

A continuous April shower couldn’t put a dampener on the St Leonards National Junior Golf Championship.

A record entry of more than 160 talented young birdie-hunters braved some wet weather to put on an outstanding display of golf in the prestigious annual competition.

Boys and girls from across Scotland and from as far afield as Bromsgrove did battle in various age categories, with U9s tackling the Balgove Course, U11s and U13s locking horns on the Strathtyrum and U15s taking to the fairways of the Eden Course.

Rosie Dawson, Director of Golf at St Leonards School, helped to organise the event which is run in conjunction with the St Andrews Links Management Committee.

She said, “Unfortunately the weather wasn’t great but that didn’t stop the players from turning in some impressive scores and having some fun as well.”

St Leonards Headmaster Dr Michael Carslaw handed over the prizes at the end of the day.

He said, “I’m delighted that the reputation of the Tournament continues to grow, as shown by the fact that this year’s event attracted a record number of players.

“Pupils at St Leonards are fortunate to have the wonderful courses and facilities of St Andrews on their doorstep and it’s great to be able to invite children from other schools to play on the historic Links.”
