Raising money for HaitiPicture: Haiti St Leonards School has been doing its bit for the victims of the Haiti earthquake. Staff and pupils turned their morning break into a fund raising bake sale with all proceeds going towards the ongoing international relief efforts. Tasty home made goodies were snapped up by kind hearted students and teachers who were keen to make a contribution to the humanitarian campaign. Head of the Sixth Form at St Leonards, Karen Wowk, said, “Some of the students in the Lower Sixth Form (S5) asked if they could do something to raise some money as they really wanted to help the aid effort. “They came up with the idea of organising a bake sale and the rest of the pupils, and staff, were delighted to be able to contribute.” Halina races her way into prestigious eventPicture: Halina Rees A St Leonards School girl has raced her way to qualification for a prestigious athletics competition. 15 year old Halina Rees is off to Antrim in Northern Ireland this weekend to take part in the Celtic Nations Cross Country Championship in which she will run in the U17 womens’ event. Halina, who has enjoyed considerable success running for Fife AC, qualified by virtue of winning the East of Scotland U17 cross country title at Livingston in December. She said, “Last year I came third in the East of Scotland championships and so missed out on qualification for the Celtic Games so I was determined to get there this year. “I’m looking forward to flying over and going up against the best of the Irish and Welsh athletes.” Crail based Halina will be one of only three Scottish representatives in her race. She is looking forward to getting back to serious athletics after the big freeze, having enjoyed a successful comeback at the Inter-District Cross Country Championships at Holyrood recently. “I don’t like not being able to be active!,” she said “I was in France over the festive period and I was snowed in for four days so I couldn’t train. “It was good to be able to pick things up at Holyrood and it will be great to get back to being part of a competitive environment at Antrim.” Pupils acting up!Picture: SLNP pupils excelled in their LAMDA exams Children at a St Andrews primary school have been rewarded for acting up! Pupils from across various year groups at St Leonards-New Park came up trumps in the prestigious LAMDA (The London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) drama exams which they sat back in the Summer. All 29 of the talented young candidates passed, netting an outstanding 12 distinctions and 14 merits in the process. Headmaster of St Leonards-New Park, Andrew Donald, recently handed out certificates to the successful students in recognition of their dramatic exploits. He said, “Our drama teacher, Irena Harris, helped to ensure that the children were able to maintain the high standards of previous years. “Before the exams the pupils previewed their exam pieces for parents and I think that helped them when it came to performing in the real thing. “I’m very proud of the children and I think the most impressive thing is that they all enjoy their drama so much.” | |
